I am eager to read about your experience with the kindle and LP guides.Im not so sure about some of your assertions and found it impossible to clarify the following issues without actually buying the gizmo and trying it out.The lack of info from LP and Amazon would suggest that the following issues have not yet been resolved;
Is there really a search facility?
Can we navigate easily back and forward as with a paper pages?
Is the page on the screen formatted so that it is the same as the paper page and there is no need for scrolling?
If there are no problems wrt the above,then I am sure that this is an amazing tool for travellers.Nobody who raves about the iPad mentions that the Kindle weighs less than half as much as the iPad.For me this is very important as I travel with cabin baggage only.BTW I have heard that there is a problem with showing the maps,however since i consider this gadget(if the rest is OK)such a godsend,that I would buy the guides and tear out the maps to take with me.

Yeah, I have the same feelings as Steph on this one. So torn! I think eventually I'll switch to Kindle but use it to only purchase new books, you know? I can't resist the ocassional used bookstore.

I agree with you about missing the feeling of getting hands on with the guide book. And this is a pretty common sentiment amongst those who don't like the Kindle in general.

I do intend to keep using traditional paperbacks for fiction though. So that's some consolation. I simply love the thrill of the used book hunt too much to give it up. Nothing better than finding an interesting novel on a hostel exchange shelf or wherever.

I am so torn on this issue. On the one hand I agree with all of your points about convenience and logistics. On the other hand I just love books. Especially guide books; I love thumbing through them, highlighting things, folding down pages etc. I have this visceral dislike of the Kindle for that reason.

I'll be interested to hear how it pans out for you though!
