Week Sauce: New Is The New Old

Posted: January 16th, 2010 | Author: Shawn | Filed under: week sauce | 12 Comments »

It’s less than two weeks before I finish flushing my worldly possessions and leave for an open ended life of travel. So naturally I had a cup of tea last night and entirely scratched my travel plans. Now I have all brand new travel plans! Why? Meh, who knows, I have issues probably. You have to  be versatile as a traveller so it’s good to mix things up once in a while. Keeps your scrotum taut, or some such.

This week in the Sauce™ I’d like to share a few sweet new travel blogs that I found. Plus great articles from some familiar favourites, some good phonetography shots, and I’ll sum up my new travel plans. Read the rest of this entry »

Two Web Services For The Travel Junkie

Posted: January 14th, 2010 | Author: Shawn | Filed under: web | 5 Comments »

Invariably, if you’re a frequent traveler these days, then you make use of many apps and web sites. Perhaps your style is as simple as using the two kings of social media spamming, Bookface and Twatter. Or maybe you like to get a bit deeper with it and you’re always banging on Nextstop and Kayak from your phone whilst you follow this dodgy blog in your RSS reader. Whatever your taste, here’s two little global web services that in my opinion add a cool flavour to the life of the traveller. Read the rest of this entry »

Newfoundland, It’s For The Travellers, Not The Tourists

Posted: January 12th, 2010 | Author: Shawn | Filed under: places | 4 Comments »

Give me exactly three minutes of your time and I can pretty much guarantee that Newfoundland will fly to the top of your “must see” destinations list. I know because three minutes is all it took for me to be convinced. I grew up in British Columbia, which for those of you not up on your Canadian geography is the opposite coast from Newfoundland, and I had no clue about the secrets they were hiding over there on the east coast.

I’ll take this claim one step further and officially predict that Newfoundland is going to become an increasingly popular global tourism destination over the next few years. You might as well start talking about it now so your water cooler buddies think you’re cutting edge. You’ll agree with me in the next three minutes, just you watch.

Week Sauce: Vegas Schwag Edition

Posted: January 9th, 2010 | Author: Shawn | Filed under: week sauce | 2 Comments »

This week I hit the last few stops on my holiday season 7 cities in 17 days tour and came back to Montreal. I’m not especially excited to be home since I now have 3 weeks to flog all my furniture/TV/etc and find someone to take over my lease. Whatever though, here’s my little weekly wrap-up of stuff and such, plus a random phone pic or two. Also this week I have a surplus of super classy Vegas schwag that you can get for free. Party on Wayne. Read the rest of this entry »

OMG NYC PBJ!

Posted: January 6th, 2010 | Author: Shawn | Filed under: dining | 4 Comments »

Peanut butter lovers, there’s a little sandwich shop in New York City that you totally need to check out. If you’re not a peanut butter lover you may as well stop reading now since there’s nothing in this post for your hating ass.

Peanut Butter & Co has a wicked menu of peanut butter based fare. Plenty of unique PB sandwiches that you’ve probably never tried. Such as the White Chocolate Wonderful sandwich (white chocolate peanut butter and orange marmalade) or maybe The Elvis Sandwich is more your style (A grilled peanut Butter sandwich, stuffed with bananas and honey. Try it with bacon for that extra indulgence). Personally, I had the Dark Chocolate Dreams Sandwich, which is dark chocolate peanut butter and cherry jam, stuffed with shredded coconut – it was delicious! They have quite a bit of their menu online for you to stare at and day dream about.

If you’re really hardcore into the peanut butter life they also have a shop. You can load up on any of their 10 different peanut butters, gift items or even their cook book. There’s plenty of ways for you to indulge your peanut butter obsession.

My only disappointment while eating there was that I didn’t spot anyone with a “PBJ4 LIFE” knuckle tattoo. Could have just been bad timing on my part I guess.

Peanut Butter & CoI had never heard of the PB & Co sandwich shop before until it came up on Twitter. So I have to thank @ottsworld and @cultoftravel for bringing it to my attention, and @mikebarish for being macho enough to help check it out. It’s reassuring to know that there’s other sensible peanut butter loving folks out there.

The Driskill Hotel, Austin: Haunted or Not?

Posted: January 4th, 2010 | Author: Shawn | Filed under: accomodations | 4 Comments »

For several years I’ve been wanting to stay at the Driskill Hotel. Not only is it a beautiful hotel, but it’s also buried in heaps of spooky history. Of all the web sites that talk about how crazy haunted the Driskill is, no one site seems to have all the ghost stories. So if you really want to read them all you’d better get googling. [Edit: The following death accounts were told to me by taxi drivers and folks around town, plus a couple web sites. For a less fantastical and more accurate summary scroll down to Monica's comment below. Thanks, carry on] There’s the owner who hung himself after losing the hotel in a poker game, the two little girls who committed suicide after being abandoned there, plus a weird history of women killing themselves in the same bathroom. Anyways, when I was passing through Austin this week I went for the chance to spend 3 nights at the storied Driskill.

Well, is the Driskill haunted? Or for that matter, was it even a nice place to stay? Read the rest of this entry »
